There are several festivals and celebrations from which Villages in the Sky draws its founding inspiration and continued momentum. There are elements that we hope to borrow from Ecotopia, Rainbow Gathering and Burning Man.
Europe’s Ecotopia festival has for over two decades brought activists from across the continent and around the world to celebrate and design progressive campaigns for the upcoming year. Workshops co-exist comfortably with theatre, music and other festive events; in fact, political content forms a core of activity which creates an Ecotopia Spirit that motivates and inspires activists for the entire year. We want VIS to have a similar message that vibrates throughout the other 51 weeks of the year. The miracle of the Rainbow Gathering is that the entire city of 25,000 people is built over the course of two weeks by the participants — without electricity, a central administration or a budget. This speaks to the incredible energy of volunteerism in a fun festival context. Much like Rainbow Gathering, VIS will depend on volunteer labor to create something profoundly beautiful and that sustains our dreams all year round. Burning Man and Rainbow Gathering both use the “Leave no Trace” (LNT) philosophy, meaning that after the event, there is an extensive break down and clean up, leaving no indication that the event ever occurred. While intellectually elegant, this ideology prevents the accumulation of fixed structures for future festivals. The current thinking for VIS is that the camping portion of the festival will use LNT to insure a high level of clean up and ecological awareness, but that there will be active construction of turbine towers and air temples (which will in some cases be the same structures). In effect, a festival ground will be created for use by other groups wanting to hold events throughout the year. And of course all of the traces we leave will be subtle invitations to a new type of creation! |
Also in 2010 another Ecotopia will take place, this time in the middle of Europe, near to Berlin on a place which will become an ecological campaign and awareness center in the future, if you like to know more, just look at our website http://ecotopia2010.org or our facebook group http://fb.ecotopia2010.org
Your invited !!
Yes! For our European comrades and fellow world travelers the organizers of Villages in the Sky most strongly and warmly recommend Ecotopia 2010 outside Berlin. It promises to be an amazing and transformative event – go if you are in the area.
intellectually elegant? describing it that way and only that way irks me. some places on Mama Earth need to only be visited, not constructed on, no matter how eco-friendly.
this doesn’t mean that I don’t like how it applies to VIC. I do.
